This paper proposes a modified S-MAC protocol incorporating a new back-off mechanism applicable to Body Area Network (BAN). The proposed protocol alleviates the drawback associated with the present back-off mechanisms. Also to achieve a better power consumption and reduced delay, the cross-layer technique was used to adjust the contention window adaptively. Performance analysis of the modified S-MAC protocol was evaluated in the Network Simulator (NS-2) by observing the energy efficiency, delay and throughput parameters. The obtained results show a significant improvement in the proposed protocol compared to the original S-MAC protocol.
