A novel coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed monopole as a radiating element of an antenna is proposed for chip size realization. The antenna is based on the elliptical geometry. The proposed CPW slot antenna is compact with the size of 26×36×1.6 mm3 which is printed on a cheap substrate of FR-4. The parameters of this antenna were optimized through numerical simulations in Ansoft HFSS, after which the antenna was fabricated and characterized. The measurement results show that the proposed antenna has a -10 dB return loss bandwidth of 5.12 to 5.91 GHz, which covers the entire required band for WLAN 802.11a standard.
