A Topology-based Traffic Engineering Algorithm for Metro Ethernet Networks

Ethernet has been introduced as the indisputable technology for local area networks (LANs) because of its simplicity and cost-efficiency. These features and significant advance of Ethernet technology pushes Ethernet toward networks with larger scales such as metropolitan area networks (MENs). In this letter, we address a solution for traffic engineering problem in the metropolitan area networks (MENs) using Ethernet technology. We introduce an algorithm to overcome congestion problem and signaling overhead by dividing the network to regions based on the network topology and nodes’ congestion. After constructing the regions, we use Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) in each region for data transmission to improve the network resilience. The simulation results confirm that the proposed approach improves the network performance in term of load balancing and network management.
